The
production centre of Pizarras Forna, S.A. is in the region of La
Cabrera.
La
Cabrera is a mountainous region in the South-West of the province of Leon
(Spain). It covers an extension of 900 square kilometers and includes the
municipalities of Benuza, Encinedo, Castrillo de Cabrera (Cabrera Baja)
and Truchas (Cabrera Alta) with a total popultion of 3,000 inhabitants.
Its
boundaries are the Aquilianos Mountains and the El Teleno Mountain Range, to the
north, and the La Cabrera Mountain Range, to the south.
Both
the quarry and the factory are to be found in the town of Forna, in the
municipality of Encinedo (Leon-Spain), at an altitud of 1,400 metres.
The
geographical boundaries of La Cabrera coincide in part with the boundaries of a
geological structure known as Sinclinorio de Truchas ("Syncline
of Truchas"), in the central area of which the stratum of slate exploited
by Pizarras Forna, S.A. is to be found. The slate in this deposit was formed in
the Paleozoic geological period, 500 million years ago.
